The Resilience Imperative
When life throws you and/or your organization a curve ball – what happens? With the increasing global risk of economic and political disruption, the speed of technology advancement, the tightening of the employment landscape in the short term, and normal complexity of challenges faced in businesses – how are you as a leader preparing to embrace uncertainty and use adversity to tackle those challenges and succeed?
Welcome to the year 2018, where the modern knowledge worker will work longer and harder than any other time that we can recall in history, at trying to tackle the continuous bombardment of challenges and opportunities they face every day. We are logging historic levels of hours working, leading to historic levels of stress, distraction and to either a neutral or a negative impact on productivity both at home and in the workplace. The modern knowledge worker has to be “Resilient” to succeed; adapting well to volatility, uncertainty, complexity, ambiguity and adversity. This is a leader who is able to THRIVE – learning to grow, and not crumble through adversity.
So what are these Resilient Leaders doing that distinguish themselves from the rest? Here are a few tips to consider
- From my discussion with Professor Richard Jolly who lectures at the London School of Business and will be joining us at the 2018 PEO Leadership Conference – these resilient leaders understand that it is not what is happening in the world or in your business but rather how you respond to what is happening. These leaders carry a positive attitude that allows them to think through the distractions and clearly conceive strategies to allow them to move through those challenges and opportunities.
- Several years ago, Dr. Jason Selk spoke at our PEO Conference and introduced us to the RSF concept which really implies that you need to “Stop the negative scenario making right now!” Document the problem and then focus on the things you can do NOW to improve your situation. Remember you are looking for improvement not perfection. So ask yourself, what is the one thing I could do differently that could make this better? Consider it a brainstorming exercise which becomes part of your tool box so that eventually you are capable of operating at 90% of the time in this manner. Research confirms that you will feel better, more confident – ultimately leading to greater happiness, health and success.
- Understand as an adult sleeping between 7 and 9 hours every night is critical to high performance. Power down before you sleep by avoiding any blue lights, computers, TV and stimulation 1 hour before you retire for the night; nix the naps during the day; and block the clock during the night – stuff it under the bed or in a drawer.
This November 2018, PEO will host our 6th Annual Leadership conference themed “RESILIENCE”. We will assemble a number of global thought leaders who will share their insights on the importance of resiliency today and what it requires to become a resilient leader. We’ll examine how to create resilient organizations where employees are able to react quickly and efficiently to change and perceive experiences constructively, expand their decision-making boundaries, develop the ability to create on the spot solutions and develop tolerance for uncertainty.
